The background -
I have been teaching yoga for 6 years now. Most classes are attended by predominantly women. There are many reasons why men aren't keen on joining a yoga class - not flexible enough, too woo woo, don't want to be the only guy, don't know what to expect etc. etc.
It's intimidating enough going to a new class. I've many chats over the years about the differing experiences especially at pretentious yoga studios. I've been there - London has A LOT of them!
I remember going to a new studio and being completely ignored. When asking about what blocks I should get i received a 'tut' and dismissed. It's brave to put yourself in that situation where the teacher has the control over the class and what you do in it, especially when you don't know the teacher. And that was me, in my 20s, with no health issues (other than being a stressed out and sleep deprived) and no mobility issues. I wasn't very flexible but you have more grace in your body when you're in your 20s. You can push your body waaay more and still bounce back the next day! We we get older we have less wiggle room. Prime example was when I played tennis and then ended up not being able to walk for 3-4 days because my lower back went into spasm.
So they stakes are higher! And I understand that which is why I teach simple, accessible movements slowly. Any movement has risks but I always aim to keep them low. (Why we don't do headstands in class... I like my neck too much thank you!)
I started teaching a mobility class at a gym venue and found that it resonated more with the gents. Take away the yoga philosophy and the more woo woo aspects and focusing on mobility. Simple movements chosen to get the most bang for your buck.
We had great results - best running time, no more lower back pain and seeing the Osteopath less, less shoulder pain, feeling better in their posture
The truth is, we tend to get stiffer as we get older and if you don't use it, you lose it! I want to help you keep doing the activities you like to do for as long as possible.
The only pre-requisite at this time is - be able to get up and down off the floor
This class is marketed as a mens class but I'm not going to exclude anyone who wants to come along!
